Civil Engineering

Design, construction and dam safety for NamWater's civil infrastructure.

Overview

The Civil Engineering Division has two sub-divisions, Civil Design and Civil Construction. It designs and builds civil engineering infrastructure for water supply throughout Namibia and is responsible for dam safety monitoring of all NamWater dams.

Civil Design has a team of engineers who carry out in-house designs and supervise and manage contracts awarded to private contractors. Civil Construction has construction teams with their own plant and fleet, so they can build works at a lower cost to NamWater than private contractors. The division's engineers are the company's principal advisers on civil engineering problems.

Services

  • Water pipeline network analysis and design
  • Structural design of buildings and concrete works such as pump stations, water treatment plants and reservoirs
  • Geotechnical investigations
  • Pipeline route and site surveys
  • Design of hydraulic structures and components on water canals
  • Redesigns and technical specifications for infrastructure being rehabilitated or re-engineered

When designs and construction are done by private consultants and contractors, the division's engineers supervise and manage those contracts.

Dam Safety

NamWater operates 15 dams that are critical for storing water for its customers. Civil Engineering is responsible for the structural safety of these dams and monitors and evaluates them regularly. The results often lead to maintenance and improvement projects, which the division carries out or assigns to other engineering divisions.
